Bursae are found wherever skin, muscles, or tendons need to slide over bone. A bursa (plural) is a thin, slippery tissue sac. They are similar to blisters in that their outer layer is lubricated with a small amount of fluid. A healthy bursa reduces friction caused by sliding parts, such as the tendon and bone. The inflammation of a bursa is known as bursitis. An inflamed bursa, or bursae, can cause pain, swelling, and tenderness around a bursitis-affected joint. This pain can range from mild and bothersome to severe and life-threatening. Although it is more common in older adults, it can also affect younger people. Bursitis can occur in a variety of locations, but this article focuses on the knee, elbow, hip, and heel bursitis. When a Bursa becomes inflamed, it swells, creates friction, and begins to irritate the muscle-tendon it is meant to protect. As a result, the bursa and muscle-tendon become increasingly irritated.
